Yes, getting married online is legal – thanks to changes in the law during the COVID-19 pandemic. A promise to “bring the Clerk’s office into the 21st century”, the Utah County Marriage License Office began a year-long effort to create a completely digital end-to-end legal marriage process. Beginning in 2020, couples were given the ability to get legally married online – form receiving a marriage license, having the wedding ceremony, and having the officiant submit information for the marriage certificate completely over the web. This streamlined process became invaluable as the world responded to COVID-19. Since then, thousands of couples have obtained marriage licenses and been legally married despite challenges posed by distance, office closures, and travel restrictions.
You’ll complete the entire process online. It’s easy, paper-free & usually only takes 2 days to get your legal, US marriage certificate. You’ll get married via webcam—from the comfort of your own home (or anywhere you like that has a stable internet connection!). The actual ceremony should take less than fifteen minutes. Within 24 hours of your online ceremony, you’ll receive a digital copy of your US marriage certificate, and a paper copy will be mailed to you within the next few business days.
